First of all, know that the desert is not just an area with sand. It can be in any form. Means from sand to snow. The definition of desert is that where there are less than 25 cm i.e. 9.8 inches of rain in a year, that area is counted in the category of desert.
The world's largest hot desert is the Sahara. While the largest cold desert is the World's Largest Desert. Both these places receive an average of less than 9.8 inches of rain throughout the year. But the world's largest desert is not the Sahara. That's Antarctica. In some of its areas not even a single drop of rain has fallen for 1.40 crore years.
McMurdo Dry Valley of Antarctica is one such area. Where it has not rained for millions of years. Here the temperature remains below minus. The surrounding mountains block the clouds. Strong winds absorb the moisture. There are icy lakes in this valley, which have been frozen for millions of years. This area is not completely deserted. Microbes, mosses, and lichens are found here, which tolerate this cold.
Scientists see less rain in Antarctica and it as a desert. Not only small creatures live here. Creatures like penguins, petrels, sea lions, and seals also live here. Those who eat, drink, and live in this desert. Antarctica is spread over 14.2 million square kilometers. While Sahara is spread over 92 lakh square kilometers.
Many places in the Sahara are wastelands. But there are many geographical places, where animals of different species are found. A single desert breaks, twists, and turns many of your perceptions. There are not only sand dunes here. But there are also rocky areas. There are mountains. There are salt fields. Savanna is a forest. Where there is water too. But it rains very little. That's why it was considered the world's largest desert on land. It is not so now, Now Antarctica is a bigger desert than Sahara.
